A year ago today I was at my going away party in Amsterdam. On my first day back in the U.S. I went into Central Camera to have the film I took during the party developed. I was feeling out of place in a city that was no longer familiar to me - Chicago and I had changed over the last two years apart. Walking into Central Camera that day changed my life, as it has for so many others who walk through those doors. Open since 1899, Don Flesch is the third-generation owner of the store. Don, upon hearing my situation, offered me a job on the spot and money for lunch and a ride home. Don took my photo on Instax wide to commemorate the event while I proudly displayed my new Central Camera pin. I loved working at Central Camera, even for a short time - it was there I would meet @greenleafkatherine and @nd1b_ and @35mmmexicana and countless others that helped me find my Chicago again.

On the night of May 30th, Central Camera was looted and burned. As Don has said in interviews since, he isn’t bitter about the destruction - he is most angry about the death of George Floyd. He has vowed to rebuild so Central Camera is just as good or even better. Please help him and all of us who have been affected by this institution rebuild so there can be more stories like mine for years to come. Thank you.
